SEOUL: Electric vehicles (EVs) need to be handled differently from internal combustion engined (ICE) cars when it comes to shipping them.

Hyundai Glovis, one of the largest logistics companies in South Korea, has taken up the challenge and announced new EV handling procedures when such vehicles are in transit aboard car carriers.

The company, which is the logistics arm of Hyundai Motor Group, said it is offering the world's first EV specialised marine transportation system in line with the growing popularity of such cars.

In setting the shipping guide for company employees and customers, it said all EVs to be shipped should first of all be marked as "EV" in shipping documents to distinguish them from ICE vehicles.

Shippers also need to inform Hyundai Glovis in advance about key information on the cargo to be transported such as EV condition and state of charge.

The guide states that loaded vehicles are subject to constant checking on their battery condition and body to ensure cargo quality.

Hyundai Glovis said it would work closely with shippers and provide them key metrics such as temperature and humidity of loading deck, and battery consumption during transportation.

Hyundai Glovis said it plans to expand its services from OEM makers to new EV makers. With new EV makers, they tend to lack experience in shipping products, said Hyundai Glovis, adding that it would offer them a one-stop service that covers land, sea and terminal transportation.

Hyundai Glovis said its workers are trained to handle EV emergencies such as a fire outbreak.

It  said it seeking more EV-shipping deals this year after having shipped about 180,000 EVs, or 40 percent of global EV shipments last year.
