Upcoming BMW 5 Series to feature improved safety levels - VIDEO

MUNICH: The seventh-generation of the 5 Series is coming in early 2017 as BMW is gearing up to start production of the car at its Dingolfing plant by the end of this year.

Contract assembler Magna Steyr will share the production load at its plant in in Graz, Austria, next year though the bulk of 5 Series production remains at Dingolfing, located 86km north-east of here.

BMW has been whetting the appetite with some teaser announcements of late to suggest that the new 5 Series will be much smarter than the outgoing model. It first said last month that the car will come along with a “Remote View 3D” smartphone app for the owner to keep tabs on the vehicle.

Now, BMW is revealing that the 5 Series will also have heightened safety, featuring the Steering and Lane Control Assistant taken from the 7 Series. The semi-autonomous driving system works at speeds up to 210kph.

Intersections are often where accidents happen and to avert such incidents, the 5 Series will have a the deployment of a Crossroads Warning system as portrayed in the video.

The BMW 5 Series has been the market leader in the premium upper-class segment for years, with more than 347,000 units sold in 2015.

“Dingolfing will remain our competence centre for production of upper-class BMW series,”said Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production. In addition to manufacturing all 7 Series and 6 Series models, the site will continue to produce all variants of the new 5 Series and also serve as the lead plant for the 5 Series’ international production network.

“The high level of flexibility within our global production network and reliable cooperation with our partner, Magna Steyr, will enable us to respond swiftly to the strong customer demand we anticipate for the world’s most successful business limousine,” said Zipse.

The 5 Series Sedan is the second BMW model to be produced by Magna Steyr; the first was the X3, which was manufactured by Magna Steyr between 2003 and 2010. Magna Steyr currently also builds the MINI Countryman and the MINI Paceman.
