PETALING JAYA: Ever since the M3 and M4 went official, BMW has caught a lot of attention for the two products.
Not only for the better performance that the new generation cars are expected to deliver but also the front end of the car.
Rightly so. The face of a car gives it a solid identity and in the latest incarnation, it has drawn plenty of criticism.
Well, you guys know what we are talking about. You have seen the pictures and the videos on the latest M cars so it doesn't need repeating how the vertical grille has elicited many an unkind remark.
It's a dramatic departure from M car grilles of yesteryear though its design was said to be inspired by the vertical shapes of the earliest BMWs.
Shaving off some height.
Ask Chip Foose and people who share his views. Some with car design chops like the aforementioned person had taken to offer their own take of what the new grille should look like.
In the ongoing debate of the grille, auto site CarScoops wades in with a tweak here and there of the standard grille in what it believes to be a better rendition of the M grille.
It homed in on shortening the grille and replacing the horizontal slats in the grille.
CarScoops argued that in good-looking vehicles, none of their grilles ever rise above the line of the headlights. Even if they do, it's just a smidgen. It said the overly tall grille had resulted in awkward proportions.
Closing the gaps.
To fix the gaps between the slats, CarScoops opted for the mesh look to complement those in the side intakes. It also brushed out the double hood vents for a cleaner look.
At the end of the day, it's a done deal on the grille as far as BMW is concerned. Accept it and move on, some defenders will say. Critics will continue to do what they do best.
And life goes on.
