Sporty BMW X2 crossover finally revealed

MUNICH: The teasing is over. BMW has finally revealed the full-blown X2 crossover in an expansion of its SUV range.

The five-door X2 is a coupe version of the more upright X1, with an upswept windscreen and lower roofline. The X2 gets the same raked rear window as its larger X4 and X5 siblings. It is set to head for driveways from early next year.

The current X1 is due for a rejig too, bringing the two cars closer together, since both it and the X2 use the new UKL modular platform that also underpins the MINI Countryman.

All-wheel-drive is on offer, but lower-specification X2 versions will come with all the power supplied to only the front wheels, putting a limit on off-road capability.

Both the smaller X-badged cars are chunky soft-roaders aimed at young urban drivers who want to combine fun with practicality.

Flanking a wider version of the signature kidney grille on the X2 are swept-back headlamps ahead of angled wheel arches and lower windows designed to create a more airy feel inside. Narrow, upward-sloping LED lights feature at the rear.

The X2 gets a choice of petrol and diesel engines seen in the X1 and ranging in output from around 150 horsepower, to 231 hp for the high-performance models.

The cockpit has a top-quality feel with plenty of assistance gadgets and the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system.

The X2 was first shown in concept form at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
