DETROIT: Jeep is freshening up its top dog and has unveiled a brand new version of the Grand Cherokee, set to begin tackling dirt roads in several countries in the course of 2021.

While US buyers are already getting started with a new XL version with a wheelbase stretched to over 3 metres and three rows of seats, exports to Europe and elsewhere will only begin with the short Grand Cherokee, which will only offer five seats, the makers say.

The Grand Cherokee, which appropriates the name of an indigenous people in the US, is built on an all-new platform with independent suspension, adaptive dampers, three different all-wheel-drive systems and an air suspension that can be used to vary ground clearance.

This should significantly improve the off-road characteristics compared to the predecessor. In addition, the US maker is upgrading the assistance and equipment.

For example, in addition to the digital cockpit, they are installing electronic mirrors and a camera that looks after the children in the rear.

They also want to improve on the levels of luxury and are promising, among other things, walnut wood interiors and handmade quilted leather in the Summit Reserve top version.

Under the bonnet, a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine with 290hp is available in the US market, as well as a V8 engine that produces 357hp from 5.7 litres of displacement. For European buyers, Jeep says it's also planning an electric model.
